FOGARTY SCHOLARSHIP
To the men of Charlie Company:

I am forever grateful for this Scholarship – not only because it will enable me to continue my studies at SMU, but also due to the memory of the incredible men who served and lost their lives on the line. My Grandfather Oscar Cantu (or Pow Pow, as we call him) is one of bravest men I know and one of my biggest role models, and I am truly honored to have a family member who serve with Charlie Company.

I'm a first year student, double majoring in Journalism and Human Rights and like the many military men in my family, I am determined to do my part to make the world a better place. My journey would not be possible without your generous gift. I cannot thank you enough!

Sincerely,
Cheyenne Spring Murray

I would also like to thank you all for your service to, and your sacrifice for, our country. You will never be forgotten!

Sincerely,

Dear C/3/22 Association,

I would like to thank you for awarding me with the George A. Fogarty Scholarship. It is greatly appreciated and will be helpful while at South Dakota State University pursuing a double major in Agricultural Education and General Agriculture with a minor in Animal Science.

This semester I am student teaching in Canton, SD. It has been a blast and I am really glad I am getting this experience. The classes I have are 8th grade agriculture, intro to agriculture, welding, wildlife and fisheries, leadership and personal development and agricultural mechanics.

With the 8th graders I took them into the shop for their first time and they made birdhouses. It was great to see how they went from being scared to having a lot of fun and enjoying the project. We also made ice cream, whipped cream and butter which of course they liked being able to eat the ice cream.

With the intro to agriculture classes we have been working on CDE’s (Career Development Events). We started with land judging where they look at the lay of the land; the texture and what could be grown there. After land judging we moved on to the leadership CDE’s. They had the options of learning the FFA creed, parliamentary procedure, agricultural broadcasting and prepared public speaking. We have one parliamentary procedure tea that will be competing in the district and hopefully state level. We also have a few kids learning the FFA creed, which is six sentences and 5 paragraphs long and a couple kids writhing speeches.

In wildlife and fisheries they have learned about the different species of mammals, hunting regulations and agree now working on habitats. They are creating their own habitats for animals of their choice and get to make a model of it. They are using plywood as a base and whatever else they can think of. They are really enjoying this project.

In welding they just got done making little tractors out of nails, bolts, washers, etc. It was really cool when they got done they are all very creative. They did that using a welding method called braising, which is where you use a metal rod and heat it up so, you are melting the metal in order to hold the pieces together.

After graduation I plan to get a job teaching agriculture to high school students. I am really looking forward to teaching horticulture, animal science and wildlife and fisheries. I have much experience with plants, animals and wildlife and want to pass that on to others. Some topics that I hope to teach about in horticulture are entomology, pathology, and floriculture. The topics that I would like to teach about in animal science are livestock and companion animals. I wildlife and fisheries I like to cover the different wildlife species, the parts of a habitat and hunting/fishing regulations.

Sincerely,
Ashley DeNomme

Dear C/3/22 Association,

I first want to thank you for your service and the many things you sacrificed in order to protect your country. Your bravery and courage during Vietnam is a reminder to us all to be brave and to have courage, so thank you.

One day while I was walking back to my dorm, I got a peculiar text from my grandma which read “Congratulations” confused by her text I called her. While the phone was ringing I realized that she was talking about the Fogarty Scholarship. When she picked up I was ecstatic to hear her news. I want to thank you for the scholarship. I appreciated it so much it will help cover some of you tuition fees.

I am on second semester of my freshman year at Sterling College in Sterling Kansas. It is a small private Christian school of about 700 students in the middle of Kansas. My friends and I stay busy though, on the plains of Kansas. There are always events and sports games going on throughout campus so there is always something to do. I am working on getting my undergrad in Communications. I want to eventually be a wedding planner and other magnificent events. I love my small school and I sincerely appreciate the scholarship that will help comer my fees. Thank you C/3/22 Association.

Sincerely,

Emma McNaughton Birky
